Koppal: Enraged over non-stoppage of a government bus, a woman damaged its window by pelting a stone at it near Lingapura in Koppal taluk, on Sunday. The woman was later made to pay the fine of Rs 5,000 at Munirabad police station.

The passenger identified as Lakshmi had come to seek the blessings of Goddess Huligemma Devi at Huligi in Koppal district. After offering prayers, she wanted to return to her native in Ilkal and was waiting for a bus at Huligi Cross. Despite waiting for over four hours, no KSRTC buses stopped at Huligi Cross. Besides, incessant rain too added to the woes of scores of women passengers at the bus stop as there was no shelter. Frustrated at this, she pelted a stone at a Hospet-bound bus damaging its window. Although she boarded the bus, the bus driver-cum-conductor Mukkanna Kuknoor drove the bus to Munirabad police station. Lakshmi was told to pay the fine of Rs 5,000 or face police complaint. Lakshmi decided to pay the fine.

“Despite waiting for over four hours, no buses stopped. We could not wait in the rain with no bus shelter. I acted in a fit of rage,” Lakshmi told the police.

It was a Koppal-Hospet non-stop bus and Lakshmi was supposed to go to Ilkal. But she had stood on the wrong side hence, no buses gave a stop. “Thankfully, the stone did not fall inside the bus. Lest, passengers would have been hurt,” the driver said.

With the Shakti scheme in place in the State that allows free travel for women, the percentage of women travelers has been on the rise.

It may be recalled here that the State government recently issued a directive to the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation that the bus staff wll face strict action if they do not stop and pick up women passengers.

Following complaints that the KSRTC buses were avoiding women passengers ever since the Shakti scheme launched, the government issued the direction.
