Mandya: Naganakere in Devalapura forest in Nagamangala taluk is being spruced up for “Gidada Jatre’ on December 6.

The annual fair is popularly known as “Second Tirupati” after the main temple at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Those who cannot offer their obeisance and fulfil their vows at the main temple, fulfil them during the fair here.

An estimated one lakh devotees from different parts of the district are expected to turn up on the day.

The lake is surrounded by green fence inside the forest and hence the name ” Gidada Jatre”. “Gida” means plants and saplings in English. Mantaps made of stone pillars in the lake is the centre of worship, where devotees perform the rituals.

Majority of the devotees are from “Dasa sect” who still visit households and blow counch and horn and seek alms to keep the custom alive.

According to locals a temple of Lord Venkateshwara existed earlier on a hill nearby, which was later relegated to pages of history.
