SC holds promotion of 68 judicial officers, including judge who convicted Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: The Supreme Court – on Friday – has put a stay on the promotion of 68 judicial officers as district judges as recommended by the Gujarat government. Among the 68 judicial officers, whose promotion would now be impacted, is Harish Hasmukh Bhai Varma, who convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case leading to his disqualification as MP.
Taking exception to the Gujarat government’s recommendation to promote judicial officers as district judges, the Supreme Court Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar observed that the promotion was sub-judice before the court.
Besides, the stay order will also be applicable to those who are not within the first list of 68 candidates.
