Mysuru: Following the recent decision of the authorities to pull down heritage Lansdowne and Devaraja Market buildings and rebuild the buildings, heritage lovers have launched a signature campaign to save the landmark structures.

On Tuesday, with a hashtag Save Heritage a campaign was launched in front of Lansdowne building opposite KSRTC city bus stand.

K M Nishanth who has launched the campaign said “Civic agencies have given reasons that the two structures are weak and need to be demolished, while in reality bot the structures can still stand for many more years. Mysuru is a heritage city and we need to protect all the heritage structures.”

With the launch of the campaign, we are giving a chance to the public to express thier opinion by marking their signature. We will later send the signatures to Chief Minister to save heritage buildings in Mysuru, he added.

Prof N S Rangaraju a Heritage Committee member and retired professor of history, University of Mysore said “these structures should be protected because they are the important structures among all other heritage structures in the city.”

Recently, Urban Development Minister Byrati Basavaraj inspected both the buildings, before announcing the decision to demolish the structures.

It has been a bone of contention ever since a portion of  Lansdowne building collapsed several years ago. Since then the building is shut and barricaded, with the tenants given alternative space opposite the building.
