Save Devaraja Market, Lansdowne building! Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar to lead protest rally

Mysuru: Following the request of traders at Devaraja Market and Lansdowne building in the city, scion of erstwhile royal family of Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will be leading ‘Save Heritage Buildings’ protest rally from Devaraja Market premises to DC’s office at 9.30 AM.

Recently in the Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham chaired Heritage Experts Committee meeting, majority resolved to demolish the two iconic structures and rebuild on heritage lines.

This has not gone down well with the traders at both the heritage structures, the tenants of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC). They condemned the demolition plans and have even decided to launch intensified protest. If the High Court also rules in favour of demolition, they will appeal at Supreme Court.

Devaraja Market tenants Association President S Mahadev told Mysoorunews.com “we are fighting for the conservation of two structures. Nearly 1000 shopkeepers and their dependents along with Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will take out a protest rally and submit memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner”.

The negligence of the authorities concerned and misinformation has sounded a death knell for these two heritage structures, despite they are strong. Earlier also in the year 2005 it was told that the said structures are weak, but even after 17 years they stand strong. Earlier we had brought international acclaimed heritage expert Arun Menon and prepared the report after a detailed study and also organised a convention at Jaganmohan Palace. We had invited public representatives and government officials for a thorough discussion, but none of them turned up. It shows their concern”, Mahadev lamented.

He also alleged that all the elected representatives are eyeing coming Assembly elections due next year. Hence they are waiting for an opportunity to get funds to raze these buildings and mobilise funds towards the expenses. It is the only reason they are adamant on bulldozing these iconic structures. We are ready to fight legally, by knocking on the doors of apex court also, Mahadev said.
