Mysuru: The Dasara elephants are getting accustomed to their long march amidst the hustle-bustle of the City to prep for the Jamboo Savari procession. As part of their practice, they walk for 9.5 kilometers covering the Raja Marga.

Abhimanyu the howdah elephant is accompanied by Bhima, Mahendra, Dhananjaya, Gopi, Kanjan, Vijaya and Varalakshmi in his walk everyday on the busy streets of the City.

The forest officials are now planning to prepare Howdah elephant 58-year-old Abhimanyu for the Jamboo Savari with sand bag practice. The sand bag weighing nearly 300 kg will be placed on Abhimanyu so as to prepare him to carry the 750-kg golden howdah.

During their practice, the elephants walk up to Sir M Visvesvaraya Circle (Ayurveda College Circle) and return to the Palace. Similarly, in the evening too, they walk up to Bannimantap grounds and after some rest return to Mysore Palace. Elephants are covering the distance in less than two hours.

DCF Sourabh Kumar explained that elephants are getting adjusted to the urban landscape. They are now planning to increase the practice gradually in the coming days.
