Mysuru: The last time the royals adorned the main Durbar hall may be several decades ago, when the princely Mysore State was ruled by Wadiyars.

On Thursday, it was a road down memory lane as the day witnessed a fete not less or more than a Durbar as the flower bedecked  portrait of Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar the 25th and last Maharaja of Mysore that decorated the silver throne, marking a fitting tribute to the Maharaja on his birth centenary celebration.

If one remembers, there are umpteen photographs of Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar seated on the golden throne at the Durbar hall when the royalty was at its peak, that has been also recreated in paintings.

Former West Bengal Governor Gopalakrishna Gandhi the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi who had revered Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar as “Rajarshi” paid an ode to the late Maharaja in his nearly 20 minute long address.

Gandhi who hailed the Maharaja for being an epitome of patience even when he transformed himself from being a monarch to common man, said “The maharaja still holds an example for those holding public office. He was also one among the four Maharajas who enjoyed the privilege of 21-gun salute”.

To mark the event, nine achievers from different fields were honoured with Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar award- L Shivarudrappa for philosophy, Lakshmi Tatachar for Sanskrit, B N S Iyengar for Yoga,  Dr T V Venkatachala Shastry for Kannada literature,  Sudha Murty for social service, B Saroja Devi for arts, Dr Ajay Desai for wildlife, Syed Gani Khan for agriculture  and Pranavi Urs for being an upcoming golfer.
