Restart self-defence training for girl students: AAP Mysuru district president Malavika Gubbivani

2 min read

Mysuru: “With increasing incidents of crimes against women, there is an urgent need to restart the self-defence classes which have been stopped due to government apathy,” said Malavika Gubbivani, district president of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Addressing media, Malavika said that “girl students of the 9th standard in all government schools were given Judo, Karate and Taekwondo training under the self-defence training programme since 2013. Classes were held twice a week with a total of 24 hour training over three-month period. But same has been stopped since 2017 due to government’s apathy. The education minister and CM must seriously ponder on restarting it” she said.

“These courses build self-confidence among girls and they are mentally prepared to face any adverse situation. Karate also helps them to achieve more in life at state and national level. Currently in the pandemic times, most of these martial arts instructors are struggling to make their own survival and starting such classes will help them to earn a livelihood too. Instead of spending thousands of crores on unwanted projects the government can easily spend about 4-5 crores on this much needed training program. It is a pity that the government is neglecting this programme” she added.

“The home minister is repeatedly congratulating himself after solving the recent Chamundi Hill rape incident but we all know what his state of mind was immediately after the incident. It is only due to severe outrage expressed by citizens and many institutions of Mysuru that the incident was solved. Otherwise this incident too would have been closed like earlier episodes of same gang. From January 2018 till July 2021, there have been 1,759 rape cases and 307 such rape cases in the first seven months of this year alone in the state. But only 6 perpetrators have been punished so far. Only due to the inability of the investigating agencies to gather evidence, these accused escape the law” she regretted.

“As per the latest NCRB statistics in 2019 there were 366 crimes against women in Mysuru district alone. Since due to lock-down in 2020 this figure should have come down but it has risen to 287 in 2020. Out of this 40 cases of rapes are against minor girls. In 2019-20 the conviction rate for all crimes was 44.27% and this has gone down to 37.77% in 2020-21. In crimes against women, more culprits managed to escape than go to jail. Under such a scenario the minister mentioning one incident repeatedly does not behove a HM of state. Instead of paying lip sympathy, there is a need to improve the system of crime prevention, investigation and conviction. The whole system needs revamping”, she insisted.
