Ready to pack a punch! Teen from Mysuru to represent Karnataka in national boxing championship at Goa

Mysuru: Sportspersons who shone in recent Tokyo Olympics are now inspiring many budding sports personalities in the city also.

Bibi Fathima S, a 15-year-old girl from St Antony’s High school in the city will be representing the State in national-level Urban boxing championship at Goa from September 12.

Fatima is already an achiever in district level, with 10 gold medals and five silver medals in her possession.

Though disowned by her parents, it’s transgender Akram Pasha alias Shabana, aged 60, who came forward to take care of her. Shabana is the foster parent for four such girl child in the city who all were neglected by their parents and pushed out of the house.

Shabana who decided to take care of them, admitted them to government schools in Gayathripuram.

Fathima is one among them who is looking for a bright career in sports.

Fathima told Mysoorunews.com ” I am interested in sports, with boxing and Karate being my favourite. My grandfather Shabana is Mangalmuki, but she is taking care and encouraging us fully. Even my school teachers and friends also wish me all the success.”

Shabana said “Daily I collect money to empower these kids. My aim is to make her (Fathima) achieve in sports on the lines of  Olympic stars.”

Transgender activist Pranathi Prakash said “there is always a myth about transgenders who are tricked off as sex workers. Now, many of them are struggling to lead a happy life. Many of them like Shabana are taking care of girls like Fathima. They need more support from society and government”, said Pranathi Prakash.
