Mysuru: Rangayana, Asia’s bustling theater hub and cultural pride of Mysuru, is preparing for a significant milestone with its renowned play, ‘Checkmate’, nearing its 100th show.

Known for its rich theatrical tradition, Rangayana has produced numerous notable plays, but ‘Checkmate’ has captured audiences across Karnataka with its riveting storyline and impactful presentation.

This November, Rangayana will bring Checkmate to the stage three more times: on November 10, 17, and 24, with the 100th show scheduled for November 17 at 6.30 pm at its Bhoomigeetha auditorium.

The production, originally a Marathi play adapted into Kannada, explores the darker facets of ambition and morality.

Directed by H K Dwarakanath, with music composed by the late Srinivas and lighting designed by Sagay Raju, Checkmate draws viewers into a tale where deception and crime converge with life’s aspirations.

The cast features Nachiketa played by Hulagappa Kattimani, Nandini portrayed by Geetha Montadka, and Sathyasheela Sathya brought to life by Prashanth Hiremath.

Checkmate delves into the lives of a disillusioned couple, Nachiketh and Nandini, who become entangled in a dangerous pursuit of wealth and thrills. Driven by the saying, “Behind every great fortune, there lies a crime,” the couple resorts to lying, theft and even murder to achieve their ambitions. But their illicit gains come at a cost, as law enforcement traps them in an intricate plot that exposes their every move.

Each scene of Checkmate unravels the intensity and complexity of moral compromise, ultimately emphasizing that no crime goes unpunished.

With a talented backstage team led by stage manager S Ramanatha, ‘Checkmate’ has captivated audiences through its compelling narrative and powerful performances.

The Hindi adaptation, directed by Snoop Joshi, has also gained recognition, but the Kannada version under Dwarakanath’s direction has solidified its popularity in Mysuru’s theatrical circuit.

As the 100th show approaches, Checkmate continues to resonate with audiences, a testament to Rangayana’s commitment to delivering powerful and thought-provoking theater.
