Bengaluru: Sandalwood film producer and distributor Ramu died due to Covid-19 on Monday. He was 52.

Ramu who had Covid-19 infection was initially under home isolation. As he experienced respiratory problems, he was admitted to M S Ramaiah Hospital on Saturday, where he succumbed on Monday.

Ramu is survived by his wife and popular actress Malashree, daughter Ananya, son Ayaan and a large number of relatives.

Ramu who had produced 30 films under his banner Ramu Enterprises, started from Devaraj starrer Golibar in 1993, which was a commercial hit. Since then there was no looking back for Ramu as most of the films were talk of the industry, especially for the action sequences that were nothing short of a seat edge thriller.

It was how the prefix ‘Koti’ meaning ‘Crore’ in English became a prefix for Ramu, for the money he spent like water without compromising on the production quality.

The movie buffs may be aware of the bike stunt in his second movie- Lockup Death’, where the stuntman in khaki jumps his motorbike from a height crossing over a van. It was repeatedly shown on movie screens in those times to arouse the interest of movie goers.

Similarly, the climax of ‘Simhada Mari’ starring Shivarajkumar that was shot in Rajasthan desert, with hundreds of action choreographers on horseback, reminding the stunts of Hollywood style.

How can one forget AK-47 starring Shivarajkumar again, where noted Bollywood actor late Ompuri had played a cameo.

When the other producers were still in awe of his production style, Ramu stunned all with with his ‘Hollywood’ production in 2002. It was also a big budget film of those times, where Upendra played a triple role, one as a Robot and Ananthnag in supporting role. It was also the first Indian robot film. It was entirely shot in Gold Coast, Australia, with Australian actress Felicity Mason playing a female lead.

He had also produced several films with his wife Malashree playing a lead role, even in the recent years. It included- Durgi, CBI Durga, Lady Commissioner, Chamundi, Shakti, Ganga, Hello Sister, Mutthinantha Hendati among several others.

Likewise, Ramu was a star producer who took Sandalwood a notch above.

Such was his uncanny taste for films that, he remade one of the popular Tamil films- 96 in Kannada as ’99’ with Golden Star Ganesh in lead role, in 2019.
