Rahul Gandhi to appeal against his conviction today

1 min read

Surat: Congress’ disqualified MP Rahul Gandhi will file an appeal against his conviction in a criminal defamation case that led to his disqualification as Wayanad MP, in Surat Court on Monday. He is expected to file the appeal around 3 pm.

On March 23, a court in Surat had sentenced Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on ‘Modi surname’ made during a speech in Kolar in 2019. He had alleged that “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” With his conviction, he was disqualified as MP of Wayanad. This meant he would not be able to contest elections for eight years, unless a higher court stayed the sentence.

Several Congress leaders are expected to accompany him to the Surat court.
