New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Gujarat government following a plea by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who has challenged Gujarat High Court order that refused to stay his conviction in a criminal defamation case.
It may be recalled here taht a court in Surat had convicted and sentenced Rahul GAndhi to two years in prison following a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi. Modi had taken objection to Gandhi’s remarks on ‘Modi surname’. Following this, he has been disqualified from Lok Sabha. Gandhi represented Lok Sabha from Waynad in Kerala.
Meanwhile, early this month, the Gujarat High Court had refused a stay on Gandhi’s conviction, forcing Gandhi to approach Supreme Court.
The Apex Court has now fixed the next hearing on August 4.
