2 min read

Mysuru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi who would be visiting Bandipur National Park in Gundlupet on April 9, will be felicitating the forest personnel who saved the life of a jumbo suffering from electrocution.

It would be the maiden visit of the Prime Minister to Bandipur, that assumes significance not just for his tentative visit, but also for the launch of a slew of programmes on the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger that was launched in 1973. That apart, Modi will release the data of latest tiger census and unveil the plans of the government for the conservation of tigers.

Earlier, for security reasons ahead of elections to State Legislative Assembly scheduled on May 10, it was being thought over to organise the main event either at the Senate Hall in Crawford Hall, the administrative building of University of Mysore or Convocation Hall of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) on Hunsur road, in the city.

But, as per the latest development, PM Modi will be launching the programmes in Bandipur forest and also go on a safari to explore the rich flora and fauna of Bandipur Forest, that once enjoyed royal patronage.

As per available record, Bandipur National  Park was previously named as Venugopala Wildlife Park, with the Maharaja of Mysore creating a 90-km sanctuary in the year 1931. In the year 1973, Project Tiger was launched and it was named Bandipur Tiger Reserve, by adding 800 km of forest area.

Since then Bandipur Forest holds the pride of conserving the population of tigers, not just in Karnataka, but also India.
