Mysuru: Prof Muzaffar Assadi Chairman of Department of Studies in Political Science and Public Administration, University of Mysore, demanded the implementation of Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act 1996 to protect the rights of tribals in the State.
Assadi was addressing the gathering during one day State level seminar on ‘Three decades of Panchayat Raj Institutions in India’ organised by the department of studies in political science and public administration, University of Mysore recently.

Assadi felt that it is imperative to implement PESA in the State which has a significant tribal population which has to be safeguarded for the enormous knowledge they possess on forest resources available aplenty. By driving out tribals from the wild, the threat of diminishing knowledge on forest resources should also be pondered over, regretted Assadi.
He also emphasised on strengthening the Panchayats in order to protect the tribals as the local feudal system reigns in the village level.
