Prajwal-Poonacha pair enters semis; Amodini, Prajwal advance in singles

Bengaluru: The top-seeded pair of S D Prajwal Dev and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha of Karnataka stormed into the men’s doubles semifinals at the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Saturday.

Prajwal, who won the silver medal in the previous edition alongside Adil Kalyanpur, and Poonacha were too good for the Maharashtra duo of Anup Mahadev Bangargi and Sandesh D Kuralem winning 6-1, 6-2.

In the semifinals, Prajwal and Poonacha take on Delhi’s Shivank Bhatnagar and Sarthak Suden.

Prajwal also advanced to the second round in the singles event, scoring a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Mann Kesarwani of Uttar Pradesh.

Karnataka enjoyed mixed luck in the women’s singles as well. While Amodini V Naik (In picture above) made the second round with a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Soumya Vig of Gujarat, the experienced Soha Sadiq fell 1-6, 5-7 at the opening hurdle to Haryana’s Anjali Rathi.

Results: Singles (Round 1): Men: SD Prajwal Dev (Kar) bt Mann Kesarwani (UP) 7-6 (7-4), 7-5; Manish Sureshkumar (TN) bt Manish G (Kar) 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles (Quarters): SD Prajwal Dev/ Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha (Kar) bt Anup Mahadev Bangargi/ Sandesh D Kurale (Mah) 6-1, 6-2.

Women: Singles (Round 1): Amodini V Naik (Kar) bt Soumya Vig (Guj) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3; Anjali Rathi (Har) bt Soha Sadiq (Kar) 6-1, 7-5.

Doubles (Quarters): Jaya Kapoor/ Diya Chaudhary (Ukd) bt Harshini Nagaraj/ Sreenidhi Balaji (Kar) 6-2, 2-6, 11-9.
