Power theft! Father, son duo fined Rs 2.22 lakh

Mysuru: A man and his son found guilty of electricity theft have been imposed a fine of Rs 2.22 lakh.

According to the order passed by the judge of eighth additional district and sessions court, Hunsur, Madhusudhan B- Chikkamadaiah, 61 years and his son Basavaraju, 31, of M Kannenahalli in H D Kote taluk are the two who have been proven guilty.

According to Public Prosecutor Ajitkumar D Hamigi, Chikkamadaiah has been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2.02 lakh for power theft and Rs 5,000 for disrupting power supply. In the case of any failure to pay the fine amount, he has to serve imprisonment up to one year. Basavaraju has to pay Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 fine respectively and serve imprisonment up to one year in the event of failing to pay the fine amount.

The father and son were running a brick kiln in an illegal manner in the agricultural field. They had drawn electricity connection illegally to the pumpset in the agricultural field to pump water from borewell to the kiln.

The theft came to light when a Vigilance team of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation ( Cesc) Limited had raided the field in November 2014, according to a charge sheet filed by Inspector Sooraj.

A case had been booked under sections 135 (power theft) and 138 (power disruption) under Electricity Act 2003.
