POP Ganesha idols seized in Pandavapura

Mandya: Pandavapura town municipal council officials have seized 18 idols of Lord Ganesha made of plaster of paris (POP).

A fine of Rs 1,500 has been collected from the vendors who were selling idols painted with paints rich in chemicals.

TMC Environment Engineer M G Shafinaz led squad stopped a goods tempo which was transporting POP idols.

The vendors were selling painted idols at Aluru Tiles Depot and near old bus stand in the town. A fine of Rs 750 has been imposed on each of them.

According to Environment rules, it is prohibited to sell POP idols as it does not dissolve after immersing in water. The paints of the idols spread in water after immersion that proves hazardous to aquatic creatures.

In this wake, the thrust is on selling clay idols sans paint.
