Police constable convicted of murdering his wife jailed for life in Chamarajanagar

Chamarajanagar: A police constable convicted of murdering his wife has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

He had killed his wife by pushing her to a well, nine days after marriage, at her native in 2017.

Venkatesh Murthy, a resident of Nagavalli village in the district is that policeman. Murthy was proven guilty of murdering his wife Divya of Dhanagere village by pushing her into a well.

Additional District and Sessions Court, Chamarajanagar Judge Lokappa N R on Friday awarded life imprisonment and Rs 45,000 fine.

According to Kollegal rural police who had filed a case under IPC sections 304 (b) and 302 filed a chargesheet in the case,
“Venkatesh was married to Divya on February 13, 2017. Despite dire straits, Divya’s family paid Rs three lakh dowry and spent lakhs on marriage.”

However, Murthy who took Divya to her home, demanded for more dowry, leading to a duel between Murthy and in-laws.

Two days later, Murthy called Divya to join him for a walk in the farm. Around 12 noon he pushed her into a well and came home to tell that Divya had drowned in a well.

Not willing to believe in their son-in-law’s words, Divya’s mother Savithramma had filed a police complaint.
