Poisonous gas leak in fish factory at Mangaluru SEZ; five die, four officials arrested for criminal negligence

Mangaluru: At least five workers died in a mishap at a Fish Meals Factory in Mangaluru.

The mishap occurred at Shree Ulka LLP in Special Economic Zone (SEZ) due to the leak of poisonous gas at around 6 PM on Sunday.

A labourer who went to clean the tank collapsed after allegedly inhaling the chemical gas.

According to police sources, while three died on Sunday, two more succumbed on Monday taking the death toll to five.

The deceased workers have been identified as Mohammed Samiulla Islam, Ummar Farooq, Nizamuddin Ali S, Mirajul Islam and Sharafat Ali of West Bengal. While Hasan Ali, Mohammed Karibulla and Hafizulla are undergoing treatment at A J Hospital in Mangaluru.

Police said “the workers were made to toil in the factory without proper protective and safety equipment. A case of criminal negligence has been registered against the company officials.

Those booked in the case are company production manager Ruby Joseph, area manager Kuber Gade, supervisor Mohammed Anwar and another named Farooq who have been arrested, Police sources added.
