New Delhi: In a landmark event held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, H D Kumaraswamy, unveiled India’s Green Steel Taxonomy, a pivotal step toward fostering sustainability in one of the country’s most vital industries.

The taxonomy release marked a historic moment as it introduced a comprehensive framework aimed at decarbonising steel production and promoting environmentally responsible practices across the sector. He commended PM Modi’s vision for a sustainable future, emphasising the synergy between industrial progress and environmental responsibility.

“Under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s steel sector is poised to lead the global transition to sustainable practices while maintaining its growth trajectory,” said Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy during the event.

The National Mission on Green Steel, central to this initiative, focuses on:

1. Promoting green technologies, including hydrogen-based steel production and carbon capture.

2. Encouraging recycling and circularity by maximizing the use of scrap steel.

3. Driving innovation through R&D for sustainable production methods.

This taxonomy is expected to serve as a benchmark for adopting global best practices while meeting the commitments of the Paris Agreement.

Kumaraswamy expressed gratitude to stakeholders, including steel producers, policymakers and environmental experts, for their contributions to crafting this framework.

In closing, the minister reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, stating, “With the support of all stakeholders, India will emerge as a global leader in green steel production.”
