Parish Priest Fr John Francis Texiera passes away

Mysuru: Reverend Father John Francis Texiera, passed away at Apollo BGS Hospitals in the city on Sunday. He was 72.

John was admitted to Apollo Hospital on April 7 with a clot in one of the arteries of his brain. He underwent Craniotomy Surgery on April 9 and was being treated in ICU. On April 16 morning he was tested positive for Covid, and developed acute pneumonia. He suffered two cardiac arrests, the second one was fatal and breathed his last at 8 pm on April 18.

The burial service was held at Belawadi Cemetery at 1 pm on Monday complying with Covid norms. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Joseph’s Cathedral at 3 pm.

John Texiera was born at Virajpet, Kodagu district, on June 4, 1949, to Paul Texiera and Hilda Vaz. He was the eldest among three sons and leaves behind two younger brothers- James Vincent Texiera, a retired PWD engineer and Jerry Texiera, who served in the Army.

John completed his primary education at Virajpet and joined St Marys Minor Seminary in Mysore, did High School studies at St Philomena’s High School, PUC at St Philomena’s College and later his Philosophy and Theology studies at St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bengaluru. He was ordained a priest on June 24, 1975, at Siddapura, Kodagu district, by Most Reverend Dr Mathias Fernandes, the then Bishop of Mysore.

After serving for a few years as assistant parish priest at St Joseph‘s Cathedral, Mysore, father John was appointed parish priest of the Sacred Heart Church, Yadavgiri, Mysore. Later he served as parish priest of Pandavapura, Kamagere, Siddapur, Shanti Pura, Nanjangud. Since last June he was serving as the parish priest of the Sacred Heart Church, Naganahalli.

John completed Master’s degree in Catechetics at Vishwadeep, Bangalore. He also served as Director of Catholic Centre in Mysore for six years. He was also Dean of Hunsur Deanery.

John Texiera was a very devoted, dedicated, simple and honest priest. He would not pain any one or confront people. He always served the people in the parishes he worked, keeping the parish together, attending to their spiritual needs. He had a soft corner for the poor and needy. In all the parishes he has worked, he has helped a number of needy young people to get education, even to the post graduation level and has helped youth to get employment. He was very dear to and loved by all the parishioners where ever he worked. He was a treasure of wisdom and knowledge, always available and helpful to friends and whoever approached him.

The Diocese of Mysore has lost a dedicated, obedient and zealous priest. Most Rev Dr K A William, the Bishop of Mysore, the Most Rev. Dr Thomas A Vazhapilly, Bishop Emeritus, all the priests of the Diocese, Religious and Faithful condoled the sad demise of Rev Fr John F Texiera and pray that God may give eternal repose to the dear departed soul.
