Mandya: Officials attached to Pandavapura Town Municipal Council on Friday went door to door to educate the people on the significance of segregation of waste.
The officials led by Environment Engineer M G Shafinaz distributed pamphlets on do’s and don’ts, besides making announcements on the loudspeaker mounted on an autorickshaw.
They were told about segregating dry and wet waste. The wet waste can be either used as a compost for gardening or handed over to garbage collection vehicles of the local body. The dry waste can be either handed over or recycled for various other purposes.
With a plastic carry bag in hand, she cautioned the residents against using plastic carry bags and suggested to use baskets weaved with wires.
An awareness programme was also conducted at Buds Foundation School and oath was administered to the students.
The awareness programmes were conducted to spread the cause, with the State Government enforcing a total ban on plastic according to an ordinance issued in March 2013.
According to the ordinance, workshops are being conducted for traders and also the members of stree shakti Sangha. The offenders are being penalised.
TMC officials Madhu, Ramesh and Varalakshmi were also present.
