Over 1,300 varieties of paddy under one roof! Impressed DC lauds progressive farmer Syed Ghani Khan

Mandya: Deputy Commissioner Dr M V Venkatesh lauded the efforts of progressive farmer Syed Ghani Khan in conserving varieties of paddy for the next generation.

The deputy commissioner visited the farm and house of Khan at Kirugaval in Malvalli taluk and was impressed by the collections of varieties of paddy and rice. Apart from the varieties of paddy grown in different parts of the state, Khan also has in his collection paddy cultivated in other States too.

DC said “Khan is doing an impressive job in collecting paddy and its germplasm and has set up a museum with over 1,300 varieties of rice germplasm at his house. They are being conserved in a scientific manner”.

Apart from cultivating paddy, Khan is also distributing the germplasm in his collection to neighbouring farmers thus expanding the area of cultivation of different varieties. Such varieties are also significant for having aromatic features, while the harvest period of few others are fast. In some others, though the period of harvest is slow, the quality is assured and is also healthy for consumption.

These rice are rich in vitamin and calcium with natural antibodies to fight diseases, the DC said highlighting the bond between the man and paddy that remains unshaken for generations.
