Koratagere: Putting an end to speculation that how long the government would give money instead of rice to BPL families, Home Minister G Parameshwar has clarified that the government would give money – instead of 5 kg of rice – to BPL families for three months. After three months, the government would make arrangements to procure rice, he informed.

On Wednesday, the State government announced that it would give Rs 170 for 5 kg of rice – Rs 34 per kg – to BPL families as it could not arrange for rice. The Congress had promised to give 10 kg of rice every month to BPL families under the Anna Bhagya scheme.

He was speaking to mediapersons after participating in a Bakrid celebrations, here on Thursday. BJP leaders insisted that the government pay BPL families if we cannot arrange for rice. Now, when the government is paying money to people, they have a problem with that too, he remarked.

“We will give rice after three months. Although there is enough stock of rice in the godowns – 7 lakh tone of rice – the Centre is not ready to give rice. But they are selling it for private parties. It is unfortunate that the centre is doing politics with the State,” he added.

This is not the time to do politics but the priority must be on eradicating hunger, he added.
