No rice for Anna Bhagya: Govt to give out cash now instead of 5 kg rice; Rs 34 per kg to be transferred from July

1 min read

Bengaluru: In view of the lack of availability of rice to be distributed under the Anna Bhagya scheme, the State government has now come out with an alternative – to give out cash to the beneficiaries.

The decision to give Rs 34 per kg was taken at the cabinet meeting here on Wednesday and as per the decision Rs 170 will be given to each head of the family of BPL cardholders instead of 5 kg rice.

The money will be transferred to the beneficiaries account from July and this will continue till enough stock of rice is procured for the scheme.

The Congress party had promised to give 10 kg of rice during the elections. However, its effort to procure rice to be given under the Anna Bhagya scheme did not materialise after the Food Central Corporation of India backtracked from its promise to provide rice.

The State government has been lashing at the Centre for not lending a helping hand to provide rice under the scheme.
