Bengaluru: Following unavailability of additional 5 kg of rice to be provided under the Anna Bhagya Scheme, the State government will deposit Rs 34 per kg directly into the bank accounts of 1.06 cr card holders from July 10.
In Karnataka, there are 1.28 cr ration card holders who benefit under Antyodaya Anna Yojana and priority households. Of which 99 per cent of cards have been linked with Aadhaar. Accordingly, 1.06 cr cards – about 82 per cent – have been ceded with active bank accounts and they will get Rs 170 to each head of the family to their bank accounts, from today.
The remaining cardholders will be asked to open new bank accounts.
Of the 1.27 crore ration cards, a member of the family has been regarded as HoH( Head is the households) and cash will be transferred to the bank accounts of these HoHs. Of the 1.27 cr HoH, 94 per cent are women and 5 per cent of HoH are men.
The State cabinet – in June – decided to transfer Rs 34 per kg cash to the beneficiaries’ account and this will continue till enough stock of rice is procured for the scheme.
The Congress party had promised to give 10 kg of rice during the elections. However, its effort to procure additional 5 kg of rice (beneficiaries are already getting 5 kg of rice from the Central government) to be given under the Anna Bhagya scheme did not materialise after the Food Central Corporation of India backtracked from its promise to provide rice.
The State government has been lashing at the Centre for not lending a helping hand to provide rice under the scheme.
