No relief for Rahul Gandhi in Modi surname defamation case

1 min read

Surat: In what could be a blow to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Gujarat High Court here has refused to stay his conviction and two-year jail term in a criminal defamation case.

Stating that the lower court’s judgement was proper, the high court said that “Gandhi is seeking a stay of conviction on absolutely non-existent grounds. Staying on conviction is not a rule. As many as 10 cases are pending against Gandhi,” according to a law portal.

Gandhi was convicted by Surat Court in April for his infamous comment “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” that he made during an election rally in Kolar in 2019. Surat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi and the court had granted him two-year jail in the case.
