Navy air lifts nine crew members of stranded tugboat from sea

Mangaluru: In a daring operation, navy personnel rescued all the nine crew members of a Coromondel Express tug vessel, stranded in the sea on Monday.

Nearly 24 hours of continuous efforts ended in a successful rescue operation as they were air lifted by a Navy helicopter. They were rescued from a distance of 15 km from Kaup light house.

Those rescued are identified as-Mulla Khan, Gourav Kumar, Shanthanu, Ahmed, Rahul, Deepak, Prashanth, Tushar and Lakshminarayan.

They are being brought to the shore from INS Varaha vessel of the Indian Coast Guard. The Coromondel vessel was on contract with New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT).

Following the severe cyclonic Tauktae wave, the cable of the vessel anchored at the port got cut and floated till Kaup, where it met with a mishap.

The stranded crew had released a video appealing for help.

Prior to the rescue operation, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, District Minister Kota Srinivasa Poojary, DC KV Rajendra and coast guard DIG SB Venkatesh had discussed about it.
