3 min read

Mysuru: The Heart Team of Narayana Multispeciality Hospital has added another feather to its illustrious medical achievements by successfully performing Transcatheter Aortic valve replacement (TAVR), one of the most advanced cardiac treatment modalities. The team had performed the treatment on 84 year old and 70 year old patients suffering critical heart ailments. With this Multispeciality Hospital, Mysuru is proud to acknowledge completion of 11 Transcatheter Aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures successfully.

The two patient cases included one of Dr. Hegde, 84 year senior gentleman, a resident of Sagara who initially presented symptoms of generalised weakness and breathlessness along with leg pain while walking. Regular ECG and ECHO revealed an enlarged and weak heart. Due to age factor, he was advised treatment through medicines. He further approached Dr V Keshava Murthy, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Mysuru as his symptoms resurfaced after two weeks.

He was advised aortic valve replacement surgery but in view of his weak heart with a kidney dysfunction, it was a high risk surgery and hence his attenders refused the advice considering his age. Aortic surgery involved cut opening of the chest and Heart to remove the calcified, degenerated old valve and suturing a new valve in place that will function like original valve to help him recover. After evaluating patient’s condition, it was concluded that, without any Aortic valve intervention his survival is short and he is considered for A breakthrough, highly effective percutaneous procedure called TAVI/ TAVR. In this procedure patient is neither on general anaesthesia nor there is cut opening of his chest, it all involves inserting a little finger size tube through his groin artery. The valve is mounted on a catheter and is navigated through the great artery into aortic valve and it is deployed across the old valve and is left in position. This procedure is an hour long non-invasive procedure through local anaesthesia and gave new life to Dr. Hegde. Within one hour of the procedure patient was talking and walking on the 3rd day with improvement in his heart functioning without much alter in his kidney function test. He was normal on his second week visit to the hospital.

Another case to present is of Chengappa, a 70 years elderly gentleman, resident of Kodagu who was diabetic with chronic kidney disease and hypertension visited Dr V Keshava Murthy at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital for cardiac evaluation without much relief bought to him even through dialysis since last few months. His high blood pressure couldn’t let his dialysis get completed. His cardiac evaluation revealed his heart in weak condition with critical narrowing of the aortic wall, a condition called critical aortic valve stenosis. Evaluating his complete condition that he was a chronic kidney disease patient with high chances of mortality if undertaken for any form of surgery, hence he was further suggested a new breakthrough technology called Trans Cathedral implantation. The procedure was done with utmost accuracy with lot of precision and planning and hence was successful with improved discharge condition on the fourth day with normal activities and dialysis being undertaken. The ECHO at his discharge showed improved results around 35% and further improved to 40% after two weeks.

Adding to the details and on the success of the patients cases, Dr. Keshava Murthy V, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart Disease Interventional Specialist at Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Mysuru said, “Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement
(TAVI) technology is a lifesaving procedure and a new advanced technology. In case of critical ill patients, giving general anaesthesia carries very high risk but these two patients recovered so well through the procedure. We, at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital aim to bring forth newer technologies that can benefit patients to the maximum. People at large can make use of this technology for the betterment of their life.”

With these rare patient cases, Narayana Health, Mysuru has emerged as the highest TAVI procedure performing centre in Mysuru. The hospital will continuously aim at delivering high quality, affordable healthcare services to the broader population in India which stands to be the overall mission of Narayana Health at large.

Dr MN Ravi and Dr Anand Lingen and Pavan Kumar were present.
