Mysuru: The death toll in the Mysuru Central Prison tragedy rose to three on Wednesday, following the death of Ramesh, a prisoner from Mandya, who had been critically ill after consuming a baking essence alternative to alcohol.
On December 28, three prisoners Ramesh, Nagaraj (a native of Hassan) and Madesh (from Sathagalli) consumed the baking essence, allegedly as a substitute for alcohol.
The trio developed severe stomach pain and were rushed to KR Hospital for treatment.
While Nagaraj and Madesh succumbed on Tuesday, Ramesh passed away a day later.
All three were reportedly assigned to the prison’s bakery unit, where the essence was consumed.
The incident has raised serious concerns among the prisoners’ families, who are questioning the safety measures and care provided within the Mysuru jail.
Authorities are yet to respond to these allegations.
