Mysuru: A two-day organic Jackfruit Fest that got underway here gave a chance to Mysureans to taste a variety of jackfruit and its delicious products .

Sahaja Samruddha, Mysuru-based group to support organic farmers, has organised the Jackfruit Mela from June 24 and June 25 at Nanjaraj Bahadur Chowltry. The fest unveiled a variety of jackfruits and created awareness on its benefits

“Jackfruit is originally organic and there is no chance that one could put chemicals to grow,” observed Shankaraiah, a jackfruit grower, whose popular ‘Shankara Halasu’ variety – grown near Hulikatte, Choudlapura in Tiptur, Tumakuru district – has received a patent from Indian Institute of Horticulture and Research (IIHR). However, he added, only the rare variety of jackfruits are struggling to survive.

The IIHR is now distributing rare ‘Shankara’ saplings to farmers and so far it has distributed nearly one lakh saplings.

At the fest, there were variety of jackfruits – ‘Shankara’, ‘Red jackfruit’, ‘Siddu’, ‘Rudrakshi’ ‘Hoomalli’ and nearly 120 variety of jackfruits from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. ‘Shankara’ and ‘Siddu’ jackfruits are now being exported to foreign countries.

Siddu jackfruit is rich in colour that resembles copper red and it’s a rare variety as it is highly nutritional, says Paramesh, grower. The demand for the fruit is so much that Paramesh had to install four CCTV cameras to protect the plants and fruits. Paramesh has now entered into an Memorandum of Understanding with IIHR for its promotion. A nursery is ready now and he plans to export it in coming days.

Making a value addition to the fruit is the crucial factor to help sustain these rare varieties and Sahaja Samruddha is working towards this goal.

Sahaja Samruddha administrator Vishwanath Anekatte told Mysoorunews.com that jackfruit is a different world, it grows naturally, does not require any fertilisers and chemicals. It is completely organic and we encourage more farmers to grow this fruit. He informed that ‘Shankara’ jackfruit is enriched with vitamin that’s rare to find in other fruits, says Vishwanath.

Some of the youngsters who are engaged in the agri-startups also participated in the fest and had put their products like organic ice creams, products made from jackfruit on exhibition.
