Mysore School of Architecture Heritage Club makes a start from 110-year old Karanji Mansion

Mysuru: The Heritage club of ‘Mysore School of Architecture’ was inaugurated at Karanji Mansion, 110 year old palace where the Postal Training Centre is functioning.

This is one of the three palaces built by Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar for his daughters during the 1900s.

The MSA heritage club has been started under the umbrella of Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, Government of Karnataka. The club is an initiative of Government of Karnataka to bring awareness and to sensitise the student’s towards heritage and culture of the state.

The inauguration was carried out in the presence of Dr Ashish singh Thakur, Director-PTC, Manjula C N, Director, Dept. of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, Dr Champa H S, Dean-Mysore School of Architecture, Prof Rangaraju, Heritage Expert, K V L N Murty, Dep. Director-PTC, Dr Balaji, Principal i/c, Mysore School of Architecture, Parvin Ragbir Singh, Asst. Director Admn.-PTC, Shukamuni Aradhya, Instructor-PTC, faculty and students of Mysore School of Architecture.

During the Inauguration, Dr Champa welcomed all and said that “it is a very fortunate moment that inauguration is being done at this heritage site.

She explained that the intention of MSA Heritage club with budding architects is to involve in heritage walks, documentation of both tangible and intangible heritage in and around Mysore along with various other related activities”.

Dr Thakur hoped that students would visit the Mansion regularly to discuss the importance and to give guidance on preservation so even the PTC team would learn how to protect and maintain the building in the long run.

Prof Rangaraju went on to explain the architectural richness of the mansion and congratulated the PTC officials saying it is one of the best maintained heritage buildings in Mysore.

He hoped that the students of MSA will be involved in documenting the process of renovation of buildings in Mysore as it will become an important inventory.

Manjula congratulated MSA for starting the club and asked the students to involve themselves in departmental works in their own capacity. She asked all to visit the exhibition which showcases the research carried out by the department that has been put up in the department at Dasara exhibition premises.

Murty thanked Manjula and Prof. Rangaraju for conducting heritage walks every week for PTC trainees.

Singh wished the students to set an example of being responsible in maintaining the identity of Mysore.

Dr Balaji proposed vote of thanks and concluded by stating the importance of such collaboration between the departments and the significance of starting a heritage club at MSA that happens to be the first standalone Architecture College in Mysore.

He declared this occasion marks the beginning of various activities to be undertaken by the institution in the interest of heritage.

Aradhya had meticulously organised the event on behalf of PTC.

MSA students were overwhelmed by the heritage palace and felt that it was a feast to visit and learn about the architectural significance of the palace. The students also mentioned that the beauty of the mansion is enhanced by the vast garden and trees. They could experience and learn that it acts as a sound barrier and helps in creating the micro climate.
