Musicologist Ra Sathyanarayana passes away

Mysuru: ‘Padma Sri’ musicologist, Indologist and dance scholar Ra Sathyanarayana passed away in the city on January 16. He was 93.

A native of Ramnagar, he was a resident of Jayanagar in the city. According to his family members, Sathyanarayana breathed his last at around 9 PM. The last rites will be performed at his native.

Mahamahopadhyaya Dr Ra Sathyanarayana (born 9 May 1927) was a musicologist and dance scholar.
 
In the year 2018, he was awarded Padma Sri by the central government for his contribution to the field of music. He was a recipient of Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, fellow of Sangeet Nataka Akademi, Rajya Sangeet Vidwan Award, musicologist award from Madras Music Academy, Chennai to name a few.
 
Between 1949 and 1984, he taught chemistry at the Sarada Vilas College and also taught Karnataka music. He has written treatises in Sanskrit language on dance and music. ‘Pundarikamala’, ‘Shruti: The Scalic Foundation’, ‘Suladis and Ugabhogas of Karnataka Music’ and ‘Karnataka Sangeetha Vahini’ are some of his notable works.
 
He was a public speaker on Indological discipline and had been an active participant in the Government of India sponsored music festivals and international seminars.
