Mock drill on disaster management! Mandya district administration ready to handle exigencies

Mandya: Deputy Commissioner S Ashwathi on Friday said “precautionary measures are the key to tackle disasters”.

The deputy commissioner spoke after inaugurating a workshop on mock drill on disaster management at Thonnur lake in Pandavapura taluk in the district.

The district administration had organised the workshop in association with zilla panchayat, district disaster management authority, taluk administration, NDRF and fire and emergency services department.

In her address, deputy commissioner said “while the fire and emergency services is working well during disasters in the district, the district administration will take precautionary measures to tackle floods”.

During fire mishaps and floods, fire personnel have effectively handled the situation, with the district administration providing necessary equipment to them. The flood prone villages in the district have been identified and the district administration is ready to check the possibilities of loss to lives and livestock and protect the properties, she added.

The deputy commissioner gave a clarion call to be prepared to take measures in the event of heavy rainfall in various taluks. Most importantly, more awareness must be created on Disaster management at Gram Panchayat levels.

The possibilities of disasters should be identified in advance and take measures by availing equipment and increase the capacity to face the situation.

NDRF personnel also explained the officials about precautionary measures.

They also performed a demonstration on rescuing people in water using household articles like water bottles, dried tender coconut, thermocoal and plastic water pots. They also demonstrated on how Disaster management teams work during drowning, floods and immersion of Ganesha idols.

District Fire Officer K Gururaj explained about various equipment like- hydraulic cutter, hydraulic spreader, demolition hammer, control chains, electrical chain cutter, metal cutter, battery operation spreader, light jacket, water tender medium rescue van, sky lift to operate 108 feet tall.

ZP CEO Divyaprabhu, SP N Yatish, N Venkatesh of Home Guards, Pandavapura Assistant Commissioner B C Shivananda Murthy, Tahsildar Nayana, NDRF Inspector Velur Ramesh, Coordinator Vijay Kumar and Chief Accounts Officer of Nehru Yuva Kendra H M Basavaraju were present.
