Mayor Shivakumar lists qualities to be a good journalist

Mysuru: “An active journalist is the one who knows to ask apt questions” said Mayor Shivakumar.

Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Mysore conducted a model Press conference at its premises in Manasagangotri on Thursday, to hone the skills of budding journalists.

Shivakumar who was the guest of honour emphasised on the qualities of a journalist.

“Any person to be called a good journalist must be aware of everything around the globe. A journalist’s main power is “questioning”. So one must know how to shoot questions, what are the questions to be asked. To put it in a simple way, a journalist must know how to smell the news.

“Journalist must be aware of everything. He or she shouldn’t pose questions without a proper research or study. Mysuru has always stood first in producing great journalists. This is because it is a cultural hub and a heritage city. All our kings in those times abided by the principles of democracy. This is the reason behind Mysuru being one among the great cities in contributing human resources to the society” said Shivakumar.

He also threw light on using technology to improve the city’s infrastructure and cleanliness.

The journalism students actively interacted with the Mayor and asked questions on the development of Mysuru city, infrastructures and many more and also received appropriate answers from the Mayor.

Prof M S Sapna, Chairman, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Prof C K Puttaswamy, Prof N Mamatha, Dr Kumaraswamy, Srinath Urs, Dr Naveen, research scholars and students of the department were present.
