Maravoor bridge connecting Mangaluru Airport develops cracks, traffic diverted

1 min read

Mangaluru: Maravoor Bridge has developed cracks cutting the traffic towards  Mangaluru International Airport at Bajpe.

The traffic has been diverted to alternative routes. Those travelling from Kavoor via Maravoor bridge towards Bajpe / MIA, should take either Kavoor-Kulur-KBS Jokatte-Porkody-Bajpe road or Pacchanady-Vamanjoor-Gurpur-Kaikamba-Bajpe rroad.

It is one of the main roads from Mangaluru City towards the airport that is used by a majority of fliers.

The cracks in the bridge were noticed during the wee hours of Tuesday at around 2.30 am. Following this police restricted  vehicular movement on the bridge as a precautionary measure.

According to locals, the illegal sand mining that has been going on unabated should be blamed for the bridge to develop cracks as the bottom portion was damaged due to the removal of sand.

Police Commissioner N Shashikumar visited the spot and supervised the arrangements made to divert the traffic.
