Mandya: Angered at the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s direction to release 5,000 cusec of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, farmers at Mandya have resorted to flash protest at the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir in Mandya on Wednesday.

On August 29, Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) asked the Karnataka government to release 5000 cusecs of water everyday to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

Upset with the CWMA decision, the protesters have now taken out an indefinite strike against the State government. Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah has also announced his support for the protest. He took to his social media platform to announce his support for the protest saying the decision will further aggravate the problem that the farmers of Cauvery basin in Karnataka are facing.

As on Wednesday, the water level in KRS stood at 101.58 ft.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the State has witnessed a 21 per cent rainfall deficit and a 35 per cent deficit in the Cauvery catchment area. The situation may prevail until September 8. However, the State may receive above-normal rainfall for a fortnight after September 8, observed IMD.
