Venkatachala, the man who gave teeth to Lokayukta dies at 90

1 min read

Bengaluru: Former Lokayukta Justice N Venkatachala has passed away on October 30. He was 90.

A former judge of Supreme Court of India, Venkatachala served as the head of anti- corruption ombudsman for a period of close to five years from July 02, 2001.

A native of Mittur in Mulbagal taluk in Kolar, Venkatachala was an alumni of University of Mysore. He leaves behind his son and senior high court advocate V Sheshachala.

A known name among legal luminaries, Venkatachala had bolstered the Lokayukta office in a formidable way by instlling fear among the corrupt and instilling confidence among the common man.

The trade mark style of fulminating the nonchalant government servants on the face had endeared him to the people.

Leading the raids from the front, the word ‘Lokayukta’ had become a permanent prefix to his name.

The tenure of Venkatachala in office, also saw a spike in the number of complaints received from meagre 20 to 25 cases per day to 200 to 250 cases.

Though he was denied a second term, he had by that time set a precedent that was ably continued by his successor Justice N Santosh Hegde.

Mysoorunews.com prays that Venkatachala’s soul rests in peace.
