2 min read

Mysuru: Hike in the prices of essential needs for Sankranti festival did not deter people from rushing to the markets.

Makara Sankranti festival is known as a festival of harvest, for it is closely related to agriculture. It is like worshipping of mother nature and its gifts to mankind.

Mysuru and nearby residents thronged Devaraja Market, Vani Vilas Market, Agrahara, Nanjumalige, Dhanvantri road and Shivarampet which is in the heart of the city for last minute shopping. The prices of flower and sugarcane had rised and it was common to see the people haggling with the vendors.

Mysuru is also popular as Mallige Nagari for the indigenous Jasmine flower and the particular flower was sold Rs 1,000 per kg. The strand of flower was sold at Rs 100 per metre. Similarly, Chrysanthemum was priced at Rs 60 and the prices of other flowers too were in the range of Rs 60 to Rs 100, due to the heavy demand.

Sugarcane is a must in this festival and so its price touched high at Rs 30 per stick. To meet the demand, nearly 10 loads of sugarcane were brought from nearby district.

Mannars Market in Shivarampet and shops on the stretch of road sold “Ellu Bella” like hot cakes.

Suresh a sugarcane merchant told “in the festival season we arecselling each sugarcane for Rs 30 and people are less interested in festival when compared to previous year”, he said.

Nagarathna, a customer expressed that price hike in festival time is expected, but still we want to celebrate the first festival of the year. This festival brings new energy to stay active throughout the year. So festival revelry keeps us going despite soaring prices.
