Makara Sankranti! Cattles ‘Run Through Flames’ at Mysuru Palace precincts

Mysuru: As many as 55 cattles including cows and bulls at Mysuru Palace took part in the ritual of ‘Kittchu Hayisuvudu” ( Jumping over fire or running through the flames) on account of Makara Sankranti festival on Saturday.

Rows of hay stack were set on fire at the lane leading towards the residential wing of Wadiyars the erstwhile royal family of Mysuru at the Palace.
It is the tradition in practice among every cattle rearers practiced till date. It is believed that it will ward off evils.

The Wadiyars who have been following the ancestral tradition have been rearing animals irrespective of cows, camels, horses and elephants at the sheds within the palace precincts.
During every Dasara celebrated by Wadiyars in private the animals take part in the traditional rituals, with select breed among them doing the roles of- Pattada Hasu ( Royal Cattle) and Pattada Kudure ( Horse).
While one among the Dasara elephants are selected as Pattada Aane.
