Lockdown in DK! Former MLC Ivan D’Souza wants district minister to take all party leaders into confidence

2 min read

Mangaluru: Former MLC Ivan D’Souza on Tuesday demanded the State Government and the district incharge minister Kota Sreenivas Poojary in particular to take all party leaders into confidence to ensure the success of lockdown in the district.

Referring to the recent announcement of Poojary in this regard, to reimpose lockdown in Dakshina Kannada district for a week from July 16, D’Souza who released a video clip to succinctly convey his demands, urged the district minister to call for a meeting of all the political party leaders at the earliest to take them into confidence.

Strongly demanding the government to come clear on the facilities available to treat Covid-19 patients, D’Souza insisted on randomn checking of swabs at the group dwellings in Dakshina Kannada district. It will be a precaution against the risk which the district administration had to endure in the future, if anybody among the group dwellers test positive. If the randomn checking method is taken, it will help in preventing the larger community from being hit by the virus, he felt.

He wanted the district minister to clarify on the free treatment available at the hospitals. Most important is to ponder over the exorbitant rate of treatment at private hospitals as in the recent days, most of the Covid patients are taken to private facility for treatment. Chances are high that even those belonging to above poverty line (APL) families will be reduced to a below poverty line (BPL) by the moment they are discharged from the hospital, said D’Souza mocking at the rate slabs at the hospitals.

The patients will have to cough up not less than Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 per day and the kit alone costs Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000, three to four times more than the maximum retail price (MRP), alleged D’Souza.

During the lockdown, D’Souza wanted the authorities to ensure that the supply of essentials won’t be hit and most importantly farmers who are busy in paddy cultivation aren’t put into any hardships.
