Bengaluru: Belagavi Rural MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar is the lone woman to get a ministry in the Siddaramaiah Cabinet. Hailing from the Lingayat community and a postgraduate in Politics, Laxmi Hebbalkar is one of the significant women leaders in the Congress party, who have been quite a force in mobilising women voters, especially. The fact that the Congress won in 11 out of 18 constituencies in Belagavi speaks to the strength of Hebbalkar among other Congress leaders in the district.

Although she has been a member of AICC, she jumped into the election fray by contesting in 2013 election from Belagavi rural but had lost. She again contested for Lok Sabha in 2014 unsuccessfully. However, she managed to win only in 2018 Assembly election from Belagavi rural. This is her second win in 2023.
Forty-eight-year-old Hebbalkar has the experience of Belagavi District Congress and State Women Congress Committee president. She had also served as the chairperson of Karnataka-Mysuru Minerals Limited and Congress State Spokesperson.
