2 min read

Mandya: The iconic Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam, located in Mandya district, has reached its maximum level of 124.80 feet for another time this year, marking a significant milestone for the region.

As on the evening of December 4, the dam reported a gross storage capacity of 49.45 TMC, with a live storage of 41.073 TMC, bringing relief to farmers and residents alike.

This achievement underscores the efficiency of this year’s water management efforts and the abundant rainfall received in the Cauvery basin.

The dam, built across the Cauvery River, plays a crucial role in irrigating the fertile lands of Mandya, Mysuru, and surrounding districts, while also being a lifeline for drinking water needs across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Local authorities have expressed satisfaction with the steady inflow of water. Officials at the dam site confirmed that water releases are being closely monitored to maintain downstream balance and prevent any flooding.

“This year’s favorable monsoon has ensured steady inflows into KRS Dam. Achieving full capacity once again signifies the importance of preserving water resources and optimizing usage for irrigation, drinking water, and power generation.”

Farmers in Mandya, often referred to as the sugar bowl of Karnataka, celebrated the news, as full dam levels promise uninterrupted irrigation for the rabi crops. This also sets a positive tone for the coming summer months, ensuring a stable water supply for drinking and agricultural purposes.

Tourism Boost

The full reservoir level at KRS also adds to its attraction as a tourist destination. Visitors flock to witness the breathtaking sight of water cascading down the dam’s gates when they are opened.

The adjacent Brindavan Garden, illuminated with colorful lights, becomes a spectacle, drawing tourists from across the state.

With December marking the close of another monsoon year, authorities emphasize cautious usage and efficient water management, especially given the challenges posed by erratic weather patterns in recent years.

The KRS Dam’s second full-capacity achievement in 2024 is a testament to nature’s bounty and collective human efforts, offering hope for sustainable water management in the years ahead.
