Mysuru: It’s simple and traditional Dasara for the consecutive second year. With the change of guard at Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), it’s the first Dasara after saffron party came to power.
In a freewheeling chat, Mayor Sunanda Phalanethra of BJP spoke exclusively to Mysoorunews.com and elaborated on the plans ahead, besides throwing light on a slew of issues.
It’s the first Dasara as Mayor?
Sunanda Phalanethra: Yeah, more than that it’s a festival of pride, but this time it is simple and traditional Dasara due to Covid-19 pandemic. We still have the responsibility to keep city healthy and simple Dasara celebration has also come in handy to stay safe.
What are the goals as first BJP Mayor?
Sunanda Phalanethra: The party has given a chance and it’s not an easy task to manage. Though it is for a short period of just five months as Mayor, my priority is to create a best impression among every visitors by keeping the city clean. We are aiming towards garbage free city with effective implementation of plans. The long pending issues related to management of solid waste is likely to be redressed soon with MCC, district minister and MP Pratap Simha putting continuous efforts in this regard.
Are you happy about political journey?
Sunanda Phalanethra: I am the proud daughter of a freedom fighter. Once my father had even dissuaded from entering politics. But I had to eventually bow to the pressure of people in the ward. I have seen both victory and defeats. It’s not a rosy path. Former chief minister B S Yediyurappa, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other leaders of the party have been encouraging me. After seeing my works, my father became happy.
Why is Sunanda Phalanethra very strict?
Sunanda Phalanethra: Yes I am strict because I speak straight. My words may sound harsh, but it comes from my discipline. As I am committed to works, I do speak authoritatively if somebody ignores my intentions. For others, it looks like harsh.
What are the plans to contribute to Mysuru?
Sunanda Phalanethra: It was a great opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Mayor. Recently, mayors and commissioners from Mysuru, Shivamogga and Davanagere City Corporations had gone to Delhi and met PM Modi. We attended the programme about the next phase of implementation of works under Swachh Sarvekshan and Amruth scheme. Three to four central government sponsored projects from will be soon launched in Mysuru.
How will you ensure justice to Covid victims?
Sunanda Phalanethra: I am highly concerned about Covid victims. State government has announced Rs one lakh for BPL families which lost their loved ones to pandemic. We are making complete efforts and coordinating with MLAs to provide assistance as per the state government. We are 100% committed to give justice.
The issues related to demolition of temples and pourakarmikas seem challenging?
Sunanda Phalanethra: Now, the issue over demolition of temples has subsided. More than that, I personally protected a few temples. It was due to the negligence of the officers, such a situation arose. While they are silent during the construction time, later list them for demolition. Regarding Pourakarmikas issue also, we are ensuring justice without spoiling the chances of any
What next in politics?
Sunanda Phalanethra: If party wishes, I will stay in active politics, otherwise it’s my last stop. I won’t contest next Corporation elections. Neither anybody from my family will embrace politics, as I am averse to dynastic politics. My daughters are doctor and engineer. They are self made and no need for any political backup for their survival.
Before summing up, Sunanda Phalanethra wished all the citizens of the Mysuru and country a Happy Dasara.
“This Dasara let the people blessed with more strength to face challenges. I pray for good health and wealth to all,” said Sunanda Phalanethra.
