Shivamogga: In BJP’s final list of candidates released on Wednesday night, Shivamogga City Municipal Councillor Channabasappa (Channi)’s name has been announced for the Shivamogga Urban Assembly constituency.
Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa is the current MLA of the constituency.
Channabasappa belonging to Lingayat community, is known for his proximity to Eshwarappa.
A four-time corporator in Shivamogga, Channabasappa was also been the BJP district general secretary.
A Hindutva hardliner, Channabasappa is an active in RSS and the party’s organisational activities.
Channabasappa had made headlines in 2015 when he infamously said that then chief minister Siddaramaiah would be beheaded if he ate beef.
Then BJP State president Pralhad Joshi had, in a statement, said that the party unconditionally disowned Channabasappa’s statement and had warned against such provocative, unbecoming language.
Channabasappa was slapped with a case under IPC Section 153: provocation with an intent to cause riot.
By fielding Channbasappa, BJP top brass has turned down the demand of Eshwarappa’s supporters to field at least their leader’s son and former ZP member K E Kanthesh.
Eshwarappa has announced retirement from electoral politics, following the party’s denial of ticket, even before the first list of 189 candidates was announced on April 11.
