Journalist roughed up by cop: MDJA to file complaint

Mysuru: While the State Government has been ensuring free access to journalists exempting them from restrictions related to lockdown, a journalist was allegedly beaten up black and blue in the city on Saturday.

Yashas Mavathur a reporter at News 1 Kannada channel was stopped by Garuda police near Jnanaganga School in Kuvempunagar police limits. The police checked his vehicle and beat Yashas black and blue with lathi.

When Yashas introduced himself as a journalist it did not help him and the policeman abused him.

He was later taken to police station, where he spent three hours before he was let off. Yashas has suffered wounds on his forearm.

Mysore District Journalists Association president C K Mahendra who condemned the incident said “the issue has been taken seriously and a complaint will be lodged in this regard”.

When the issue was brought to the notice of Cooperation and district incharge minister S T Somashekar he said ” I have directed the police commissioner to initiate action after vetting into the rationale of the incident”.
