Bengaluru: Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) has petitioned Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai to initiate action against the policeman who manhandled a journalist in Mysuru.

Yashas Mavathur a reporter with News 1 a Kannada channel was allegedly beaten and abused by a policeman near Jnanaganga School in Kuvempunagar on Saturday.

KUWJ President Shivanand Tagadur who has raised the issue with the home minister has condemned the incidents related to journalists and police that are recurring at places. Despite the instructions given by the higher ups to ensure hassle free job for journalists, those in the lower rung are creating a trouble.

Most importantly, during lockdown, the journalists are discharging their duties without deviating from their responsibilities.

The prime minister himself has considered media as essential services and the state government has also issued instructions in this regard.

Despite all these, Yashas had to face abuse at the hands of policeman in question and was taken to the police station where he was confined for three hours.
