Hassan: Students from Jammu and Kashmir were allegedly asked to shave their beard, following instructions from the faculty at the Government Nursing College in Holenarasipura, triggering a controversy.
Thirteen Muslim students, who are studying nursing at the college under the PMSS (Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme), have raised a hue and cry, stating that the request conflicts with their religious beliefs.

They have appealed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to intervene in the matter.
According to college authorities, all the students were instructed to shave and trim beard before participating in clinical lab sessions, with the administration citing hygiene and lab practice standards as reasons. However, the 13 Muslim students declined, citing religious and cultural reasons. The students voiced their concerns on social media, tagging Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Kashmir Students’ Federation, along with Sajjad Lone and other prominent leaders of the valley.
College Principal Chandrashekar clarified to the media, “We instructed all students—not just the 13—to shave, as beards can interfere with clinical lab procedures. However, these students refused to follow the directive.”
Following the students’ objections, Holenarasipura Police Inspector Pradeep Kumar and Deputy Superintendent of Police Shalu visited the college to investigate the situation.
Meanwhile, the Medical Education Department is learnt to have issued a show cause notice to the college Principal and issued instructions to not to escalate the matter.
