JDS has offered Mayor’s chair to Congress: R Murthy Congress city president confirms

Mysuru: In a surprise turn of events, Janata Dal ( Secular) has offered Mayor’s post to its ally Congress in Mysuru City Corporation (MCC).

The election to the first citizen of the city is scheduled on June 11 at 12 noon. The MCC has already announced the calendar with Regional Commissioner Prakash as presiding officer to conduct the election on the D-day.

The election is necessitated after a gap of three months as the previous Mayor Rukmini Madegowda was disqualified following a court order, that was upheld by the High Court.

In the absence of mayor, Deputy Mayor Anwar Baig of Congress is acting as Mayor.

Congress City unit President R Murthy who spoke to media persons on Tuesday, confirmed that JDS MLA Sa Ra Mahesh has already interacted and offered Mayor’s post. In this wake we are also holding discussions with our party Corporators.

Murthy claimed that Mahesh has also spoken to MLA Tanveer Sait and KPCC Working President and former MP R Dhruvanarayan.

We will finally decide after meeting Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah and KPCC President D K Shivakumar, Murthy said.

Following these developments, the hopes of Congress corporators who had won on general category has sprung again.

Former deputy mayor Shanthakumari the sitting Congress Corporator representing Ward 32 in MCC has emerged as a frontrunner. She was previously the leader of ruling party in MCC.

Another aspirant from the same party is Shobha Suneel representing Ward 61.

In JDS also, second time Corporator Ashwini Ananthu is also vying for the top seat.

Following the disqualification of Rukmini Madegowda of JDS, the council is reduced to 64 Corporators against total 65 wards.

Party wise- BJP has highest of 22 corporators followed by 19 of Congress, 17 of JDS ( excluding Rukmini), five independents and one BSP Corporator.

Besides, the MLAs, MLCs and MP on voter’s list for mayoral poll will also be a part of voting process. It makes for a total of 72 voters.
